5 Simple & Effective Ways to Beat the Winter Blues ~ Wellness Tips From One Mumma to Another

Updated: Aug 9

Breathwork & Sound Healing Melbourne by the Meditating Mumma

Mums of Melbourne.... Are you struggling to stay motivated & often find yourself getting sick throughout the colder months?

These winter wellness tips are easy to implement, nourishing and perfect for mums needing a little reset!

Let’s not sugarcoat it, Melbourne winters can feel sooo loooong, miserable and such a drag!

The grey skies, the constant drizzle and the multiple layers of clothing (upon layers, upon layers). And for us boy Mums? The cabin fever is real.

But over the past few years, I’ve figured out a few super simple things that help me stay sane(ish), connected and even kinda cosy when the cold hits.

Here are 5 things I do to keep my mood lifted and my nervous system calm, even when I’m wearing bed socks and my sexy Oodie:

#1 - 🌞 A Bit of Sun on My Skin (Yes, Even in Winter)

You know that feeling when the sun finally peeks through and you just stand there, arms out like a lizard? That’s not just a vibe, that’s vitamin D, baby! Even just 10–15 minutes a day of sun on bare skin (arms or legs) can make a big difference to your mood.

Low vitamin D has been linked to the winter blues, and I’m all about the easy wins.... so when the sun shows up, I show up too!

👉 Have a read here of the science behind why it helps.

🧠 Bonus health tip: Even a few minutes in natural light, especially watching the sunrise & sunset, can help support your circadian rhythm, improving your sleep and mental clarity!

#2 - 🌱 Grounding (a.k.a. Kicking Off My Shoes)

Yep. Even in Melbourne. Even when the grass is a bit damp (it actually works best on wet ground!) I get my bare feet on the grass at least once a day, even if it’s just for a minute while the kids run wild around me.

Grounding (or earthing) helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and reset your energy. It sounds a bit woo-woo, but it’s backed by some pretty legit science too.

#3 - 🚶‍♀️💃 Move That Lovely Body of yours!

When in doubt, dance it out. I’m not talking about workouts or fitness goals. I’m talking about throwing on your favourite feel-good tune and having a boogie while cooking dinner, cleaning the house or any spare 5 minutes throughout the day!

I also highly suggest a quick 20 minute walk out in the fresh air when the rain stops!

Movement shifts energy. It lifts your mood and it tells your brain, “Hey, we’re OK.”

👉 The proof is in the (science-backed) pudding.

P.S. This one ticks both the physical health and mental health boxes - win-win!

#4 - 💧 A Little Cold Exposure (Don't worry, not the scary kind)

I know, I know. Cold in winter? You must think I’m crazy, but hear me out!

Short exposure to cold, like finishing your shower with 30 seconds of cold water can help with mood, energy and even stress resilience.

You don’t need to do full-on ice baths (unless you want to - then hit me up, I know a gal 😜).

Even small cold moments tell your body how strong you really are.

👉 Here’s a great breakdown on why it works.

(If you are curious about deeper cold immersion practices like Ice Baths, I run both community and private events that gently guide you through them)

#5 - 👥 Actual Human Connection 🫶 (Not Just DMs)

This one’s the biggie. I get it, winter makes us want to hermit. But connecting with actual humans (face-to-face, not just on socials) can completely shift your mood.

Go grab that coffee. Walk with a friend. Come to one of my Melbourne community meditation or breathwork sessions and sit in a circle with other lovely like-minded women.

We as humans are wired to connect, and your nervous system needs it.

👉 Science agrees. Social connection is medicine.

~ A Final Thought ~ Because us Mums deserve to Feel Good, Too! 💖

You don’t need to do all the things perfectly! You don’t need to make it a ‘must do’ hour long daily routine. Just sprinkle in what feels good, go gently and most of allenjoy doing it!

Melbourne winters can be tough, but you are tougher! You’re a mum after all… and we’ve been through a lot of harder things!

I promise you, if you do these 5 things, winter will feel like less of a lull and you will feel so much better - both mentally and physically.

And if you ever need a warm cacao, a cosy community, or a nervous system reset, I’m always here! I host meditation for mums, facilitate breathwork (based in the south east, but also travel all across Melbourne) and offer experiences like sound healing and ice baths to help you feel supported from the inside out!

If this sounds like something you need, please don't hesitate to get in touch to see how we can work together! 👉 Let's connect! 👈

With love, warmth (and probably a hot water bottle),
